            « La disposition que j’emploie permet d’obtenir, non plus un gauffrage, mais une véritable gravure de la parole sur un métal résistant . . . . En faisant marcher mon appareil et un parlant devant la membrane, j’ai obtenu sur les cylindres de zinc ou de laiton un sillon bien marqué, rempli d’un petit pointillé bien accentué . . . . Pour avoir là un phonographe il fallait faire reproduire à la membrane les vibrations qui correspondent aux creus et aux reliefs gravés sur le cylindre.  Cette operation, je ne l’ai pas encore faite. »

M. Delecheneau submitted the description of an apparatus which he considers a modification of the phonograph.  Extract:

            "The arrangement employed by me enables me to obtain, not an embossing, but a real engraving of speech on an unyielding metal.

            "By putting my apparatus in motion and speaking before the membrane, I have obtained a well marked furrow filled with small well defined dots on zinc and brass cylinders.  In order to have a phonograph the membrane should reproduce the vibrations corresponding to the hollows and reliefs engraved on the cylinder.  I have not yet performed this operation.”
