Library of Primary Texts

When I first started this website back in 2000, it was challenging to find primary texts relating to early sound media online, so I transcribed and posted a number of them here. Since then, the landscape has changed drastically, rendering that original endeavor somewhat obsolete—but I've kept the collection online nevertheless.

Directory of U. S. Phonograph Patents

Comprehensive list of 2,211 phonograph-related patents issued in the United States between 1913 and 1919, organized by year, plus an index to patents issued from 1878 to 1919 organized by current classification.



Labelography of Home Recording Discs

The goal of this project is to assemble an illustrated list of label types found on home recording discs of the mid-twentieth century. I haven't kept up with it, but judging from the correspondence I've received, people do find it useful.

  • 78-L is "for 78 RPM record collectors and those who study artists, music composers, record companies and the history of the 78-RPM era." 78-C is its commercial "sister group."
  • ARSCLIST is "an unmoderated mail reflector to facilitate the exchange of information on sound archives and promote communication among those interested in preserving, documenting, and making accessible the history of recorded sound"—and not limited to members of ARSC.
  • The Antique Phonograph List (PHONO-L) is "a discussion group primarily devoted to the collection, restoration and preservation of phonographsm" and the Antique Phonograph Afficionado List (Phonolist) is used by "antique phonograph collectors, restorers, and trade tips, techniques, spare parts, info and news. All acoustic phonographic devices are discussed and appreciated."

  • The Phonograph Ring is "for anyone who collects, repairs, and sells phonographs, gramophones, cylinders, and 78 records."
